Once a young individual becomes a student, he would be subjected to a number of academic tasks and activities all designed to train and nurture him or her into a mature and reliable person in the future. One of these academic tasks and activities is essay writing.
Teachers have been assigning their students to write essays not just for shallow reasons. They wanted to instil the basics of writing into their students, as essays could be considered as one of the simple forms. When reading essays written and submitted by their students, teachers usually expect to read impactful compositions. Students, however, sometimes fail to meet that expectation. Teachers can do something to boost the impact of essay writing for students, which in turn enables them to write impactful compositions. How can teachers achieve that?
Some students do feel bored when confronted with an essay writing task. This is primarily because teachers are entirely dictating what particular topics their students should be writing. While this is entirely permissible and allows teachers to guide their students to a more fruitful academic study, it may lead the understudies to lose interest. Thus, at times, it may be beneficial for teachers to let their students choose their own topic, as long as they choose ones that are relevant and related to the subject and lessons. Students who are given the chance to write about a topic they prefer are usually more than willing to spend more effort, more time and resources to be able to compose an impactful essay.
Teachers could also help lead their student to write impactful essays by providing them with example compositions. Students may not be able to write such essays if they do not have something or even someone to serve as a pattern or as a standard. They would not have an idea how an impactful composition is written or what are its elements. Thus, it would be recommendable for teachers to provide essay examples to their students, particularly ones they have written. That would be a good instance of learning through examples.
Some students get stuck writing essays that don’t have much impact simply because they haven’t written other authentic compositions that might help them conquer their incapacities. For instance, teachers could task their students to write argumentative compositions and even letters. They could also task their students to do something like blogging and article writing.
Guidance is also a primary factor to consider if teachers want to increase the impact of the essays of their students. They need to teach the writing is an ongoing dynamic process. It does not end after a student has completed the first draft. To be more impactful, essays should be subjected to a series of editing as well as revision. Teachers should allow students to ask for any advices or help regarding their ongoing essays. After all, guidance could only be given once students submit themselves to their teachers.
Essay writing is not an easy task. Underestimating this academic task could be disastrous on the students’ part. Of course, teachers should not allow this to happen. As much as possible, teachers should bid to increase the impact of essay writing for their students. Only by then, students could be able to write impactful compositions.
